Klumpke’s Paralysis
Klumpke’s paralysis is one of the most renowned paralyses of hand and arm. In this disease the body part become completely immobile and inactive to perform any kind of function. It is mainly caused due any fall, carrying or clutching something heavy in hand or it could also be a birth injury. The main reason of this paralysis is any default or disturbance in the nerves of spinal cord which are supplying the arm and hand. As every action has its reaction so in return to this nerve destruction some of the muscles of arm and forearm get deformed. This results in the incapability of hand to perform any function. Along with this some of the other movements of upper limb or arm are lost. The muscles which got paralyzed are intrinsic muscle of hand and ulnar flexor of wrist and finger. Both of these muscles are obtained from the lower trunk of brachial plexus located in our back bone. The deformity which the patients have to face is the claw ness of hand, Horner’s syndrome, ptosis and miosis. Loss of sensations is also caused in the paralyzed region.
There are so many other kinds of paralysis related to klumpke’s paralysis like injury to the serratus anterior cause due to carrying something heavy on the shoulder. This results in the deformity of the shoulder like winging of scapula and loss of pushing and punching action. If the injury is caused in the lateral cord of spinal cord then the dislocation of humerus or arm takes place. The nerves which are affected in this paralysis are musculocutaneous and median nerve. The movements which are lost by the arm are flexion of arm and wrist. The muscles supplying to this area are bicep and coracobrachialis. Paralysis of any kind proves fatal for the human body as a person lost all kinds of the movements and become unable to move any part consciously. There is no specific treatment for all of the above mentioned paralysis but by administrating the body to physiotherapist can correct the default at some extent.
