Reading Faces Is an Art
A man’s face, if we can read it aright, is generally an index to his character. We can tell what sort of man he is by the expression of his countenance, as we can tell the species of a shell-fish by its shell, just as a shell-fish secretes its shell, so the soul secretes its physical face. It is our inner self who makes our faces and we make them gradually and unconsciously evident to express our inner character. Character is simply, the figure total of confirmed habits, and as a habit is formed, it slowly writes its characteristic marks on the face and gives it own look to the eyes.
But it is harder to read character on the faces of grown up men and women however one can often detect meanness or frankness even on the face of a child, but the older people get fixed their habits, that’s why, easier it becomes to tell what sort of people they are from their faces. Sometimes we observe someone’s face and we find him or her as a rude person but in reality they show totally changed character from what we have judged them.
There are certain kinds of faces which almost anyone can read. The character is written in capitals on the face. We cannot mistake the red and swollen face of the drunkard, the pride in the face of the arrogant, and the sneaky look in the eyes of the sneak. But it takes a trained and careful observer to read some faces, like some clever people can make their faces as masks to hide their real selves. The word “hypocrite” literally means actor and an actor can make up his face so as to appear on the stage, a different person, so can a hypocrite.
A false hearted man may have an apparently frank and open face, a cruel man may wear a false kindly smile, a scoundrel may look very honest at sight. As one wise person says that a man may smile and smile, and be a bad character. Sometimes we met the old persons who appeared to be a generous and almost virtuous personality but suddenly we knew that he had been guilty of several brutal and purposeful crimes.
But the faces have always something that will betray such hypocrites to an acute observe, especially in the most expressive features like the eyes and the mouth. A look in the eyes, the way in which he shapes his mouth may betray the hidden meanness, cruelty, cunning or selfishness that prowl behind the friendly smile and the frank look. Certain it is that dishonesty, desire and cruelty, honesty purity and kindness all leave permanent marks on the face.
